OPIUM: THE CONFESSIONS OF THOMAS DE QUINCEY - SATURDAY 4th SEPTEMBER

Opium: the Confessions of Thomas de Quincey is a one-man show which will star established West Midlands actor, Jonathan Goodwin (www.jonathangoodwinactor.com) in the titular role. Set the year 1843, we find de Quincey ailing due to a lifelong addiction to opium and the despair caused by the death of his eldest son Horace, who was killed the previous year fighting in the Opium War against imperial China.

The play itself takes its basic structure from de Quinceys own Confessions of an English Opium Eater, regaling the audience with our heros first tentative steps into opium eating. De Quincey is at times humorous, almost self-deprecating when describing his experiences of the drug and life in general - refusing to be drawn into self-pity.

As the play progresses de Quinceys mood and behaviour becomes ever more erratic. He is heavily under the influence of opium and his intake of the drug is at an all-time high. In many scenes de Quincey suffers hallucinations, usually these are images from his past and they either haunt him or delight him, depending on their nature. There is a particularly touching scene where de Quincey sees his beloved sister, whose death in childhood greatly marked his early life.

Sometimes the subject of the hallucination is shown to the audience, as when de Quincey talks to his recently deceased son, but usually the stage is empty save for de Quincey.

The performance will take place from 5 – 5.30pm with a DJ playing throughout, the idea being that the music will not intrude on the performance but both complement and enhance it, thus providing the audience with a complete visual and auditory experience.

ALL MIXED UP IN SUPPORT OF OMAR GAVIN – FRIDAY 17th SEPTEMBER

On Friday 17th September, The Vaults is supporting a brave young man whose struggle has pulled at the heart strings of The Vaults staff and those close to him, 17 year old Omar Gavin.

We are offering our exclusive private booths in the bar free of charge for the evening and asking instead that parties make a donation for a booth which will go directly to helping Omar.

Omar was diagnosed with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy at 7 years old. MD is caused by mutations in the genes that are responsible for the structure and functioning of a person’s muscles. Over the years, Omar slowly lost his mobility, became wheelchair bound and told he may not reach 20 years of age. Omar’s mother, Marvelino, struggles as a single parent to care for him. She is a 50 year old lady and each day has to carry Omar on her back up and down the stairs. She has received no help from Social Services and when she pressed them they threatened her with a care order. All she wants to do is look after her little boy, who is so worried about dying soon.

With the right nutrients we can help Omar. Some new products available cost more than Marvelina’s weekly income and without your support and generosity she certainly couldn’t afford to help Omar in this way. We really want to raise enough money to fit Omar’s home with a stair lift which cost about £900 at least for a used one... this would make such a difference to both Omar and his mother.

Booth guests and bar guests will also have the chance to win a variety of fantastic prizes... details coming soon!

With our ever popular Friday night, All Mixed Up, we are also offering 2 for 1 on specially crafted cocktails, all night. Our doors open from 5pm, our resident DJ’s will be playing their mix of house, soul, disco and funk from 9.30pm and we will be collecting donations throughout the night.

We massively appreciate all of your help and support as we feel so heartfelt about this boy’s condition – everything you donate will go directly on helping him. This is going to be a fantastic night out and all for such a great cause, we hope you can make it down!

‘RECOLLECT’ ART EXHIBITION BY LISA TRAVERS AND KELLY WASHBOURNE – TUESDAY 28th SEPTEMBER

Artists Lisa Travers and Kelly Washbourne have collaborated previously, bringing a series of exhibitions to Moseley back in 2004. Now they are joining forces again to exhibit at The Vaults on Tuesday 28th September from 6 – 9pm, and are relishing the opportunity to decorate the Victorian brickwork with their latest contemporary artworks. Kelly’s expressive oil paintings and Lisa’s calligraphic works on wood together reflect a love of bold, graphic and abstract painting that work together seamlessly.
